Federer 2014 Prototype Racquet Different from Summer 2013

Before he arrived in Brisbane, Roger Federer in an interview confirmed he would be using a new racquet to start off the new 2014 season.

While the Swiss maestro tested a blacked out 98 square inch prototype racquet during the past summer, it was confirmed that the new frame was not the Blade 98, and that the testing was far from over.

After putting off plans to revisit new prototypes until the off season, Federer claimed that the new racquet was slightly different than the version he previously used. In closer photos from his first practice session in Brisbane, those details are slowly becoming visible. The prototype he used in Hamburg and Gstaad in the summer of 2013 had four mains in the area of the throat, with a 16 x 19 string pattern, yet dense in the center of the racquet.

In Monday’s press conference, Federer said his current prototype is a “different racquet to what I was playing after Wimbledon,” and Wilson gave a second round of racquets based on his feedback. “This one feels more like an extension of what I had before & it’s very futuristic.” (Press conference video below, 7:40 mark).

The new prototype being used now has only three mains in the throat area, retaining the 16 x 19 string pattern, yet resembling a closer spacing to his long time Pro Staff 90 over the years. More difficult to tell, is if this new frame features a PWS characteristic, and if it may be different than the 98 square inch head size, such as 95 square inches. This would make the frame very similar to a Pro Staff 95.

The racquet not being used is the one above, the 2014 Wilson Pro Staff 90. This frame was in line for Federer to use from the beginning of the 2014 season. At this time, there is no official word on the name and brand marketing of the blacked out racquet the Swiss maestro is currently using in Brisbane.

The Swiss maestro was been busy this off season, both on court with training and off court with business matters. Catch up on the latest news and updates.
