Federer Perseveres Past Coric into Eighth BNP Paribas Open Final – Down a set and a break, and then twice down a break in the third set, somehow, Roger Federer managed to come back and overcome 21-year-old Borna Coric in a 2 hour 20 minute semifinal match. The Swiss maestro was forced to grind with his much younger opponent, who displayed solid poise throughout the match. The Croatian balanced his aggressive play with consistency, hanging in the match early on, and surprising the sold out crowd, when he broke serve at 5-5. Coric would serve out the first set 7-5, and immediately broke the 36-year-old Swiss to start the second set.
The 5-time BNP Paribas Open champion would not have much rhythm to his game until he broke Coric’s serve late in the second set at 3-4, quickly holding serve to go up 5-4. The momentum seemingly shifted when Federer evened the match at a set a piece, but the rollercoaster had just begun. The Swiss saw his serve broken at love to start the third and final set, and although he broke back in the very next game, Coric broke serve for the fourth time and was within sight of his first ATP Masters 1000 final.

With Rod Laver and Pete Sampras once again in attendance watching, Federer clawed his way back again, and then won the final eleven points of the match to clinch victory, 5-7 6-4 6-4. The 20-time grand slam champion eclipsed his best start to a season (16-0 in 2006), as he is now 17-0 in 2018. He is through to his eighth BNP Paribas Open final in Indian Wells, and will Juan Martin Del Potro, who defeated Milos Raonic 6-2 6-3 in the second men’s semifinal.
