Roger Federer made an emphatic start to his 2014 campaign at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The five time champion started the very first point in the same way he has for most of the year so far. The strategic play mixed in with net play proved to be too good for Benjamin Becker. The Swiss maestro eased past the German to take the first set in just 22 minutes, before coasting to a straight sets victory, 6-1 6-3.
Encouraging play included 24 winners to just 11 unforced errors, winning 13/16 points at net and converting 3 of 4 break point opportunities. Federer will face either Radek Stepanek or Michael Russell in the second round. Monday night’s return for the Swiss also included a spectacular point, including a Federer tweener.
