Federer seeded #3 at Wimbledon

Odd to me but Roger Federer was handed the #3 seed today by the All England Club. Defending champion Rafael Nadal is seeded first followed by Novak Djokovic. Federer is a 6 time champion at Wimbledon and has been in the final, seven of the last eight years, but the All England Club’s formula worked itself out to hand the #2 seed to Nole. The draw should be out in a day or two and it will be interesting to see which side Roger will be in. Will he be placed in the bottom half with another possible semifinal against Djokovic? Or could he possibly be in the top half, and have a chance at playing Rafa (semfinal)?

Of course what we all want as Federer fans is for Roger to hoist that Wimbledon trophy for a 7th time (tying Pete Sampras for most in the open era).

Interesting possibilities for sure. Check out the rest of the seedings below.

  2. I doubt very much that Wimby “meant anything” by the seeding. He will play to win or not no matter the seedings.

    I love that picture of Roger that you are using as your banner. I have that in my screen saver collage, except full, with the legs. His calves are corded with muscle that seems sculpted. The energy in that image! Headed for the net. Is he the modern David?

  3. I agree. Wimbledon has a formula they use for seedings and Nole must have enough of a gap above Federer in his ATP ranking points to earn that #2 seed. Of course Roger plays slams to win and nothing else.

    Nancy, thanks a lot! I was going thru old Wimbledon photos for the banner which took a while to crop and edit with the limited space. I hope to get as many of the Federer photos I have from over the years uploaded right here on FedererFan07!

    One thing in every photo is how precise and consistent Roger’s form and technique is. It has not changed in several years since we’ve seen him make his mark at the top of the mens game. He also has his eyes locked on the ball the entire time. Incredible.

    Thanks for posting the full photo of “Roger to the Net.” Beautiful. Looking forward to some of the treasure in your vault over time.

    And I’d wondered if I was the only one learning as much from the stills as from the videos. With the stills you have a chance to notice every detail of his method. Cliff Drysdale calls it text book. Well, yes, but Roger’s attention to form is so well balanced with his intuition and imagination, not found in books or statistics.

    Even Roger’s facial expression is indicative of his economy of movement. Notice some of the closeups of other players striking the ball, the grimaces, gnashing, expenditures of thrust and energy that seem to me superfluous.

    1. Excellent description! I have as I’m sure you have, noticed the finest details from watching Federer play on tv, highlights, slow-motion videos, photos, and especially live in practice and a match from very close up. There has never been nor may there never be anyone who hits the ball, moves on court so swiftly, and carries himself the way Roger does. It is really as if tennis is something that is just in him, not something he had to learn. Obviously though he learned it, worked and works very hard on his fitness and finding rhythm.

      His form, technique, stroke, game, motion, and movement (other than slightly slower speed due to age) has not changed one bit over the years and in every single photo he is watching the ball all the way into the string-bed of his racquet, completely emotionless and in calmness.

Its at http://youtube.com/federerfan07 and there you’ll see just how effortless he looks in practice. Its as if he’s practicing just because he has to. He puts in his real hard work when no crowd is watching (Dubai training, February, July, off season).

      Of course I’ve forgotten to ask if you’ve had the privilege of seeing Roger live. If you have not, definitely try sometime soon!

        Note that Klinkenborg practices the same principle as Roger—economy—in his own craft.

        1. Thanks for your insightful comments. I had not read that article but its right on about Roger and the principle of economy, more specifically efficiency, is something I don’t think we will ever see in tennis again. The sport has changed completely from even 2007 and we are witnessing the last brilliant flashes of what it used to be (and something beyond in Federer) by seeing the few players who still display those styles. I need to read the New York Times more often!
