Roger Federer had no trouble against Leo Mayer Tuesday afternoon in New York, dispatching the 34th seed with ease to advance to the second round at the US Open. The 5-time champion raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set, firing shots at will, including an flying smash to close out the second set. The 2015 US Open marked 64th consecutive grand slam the 34-year-old Swiss is playing.
Federer needed just 77 minutes to seal his opening round win, 6-1 6-2 6-2. He will face Steve Darcis in the second round on Thursday. The Swiss maestro served up 11 aces, winning 84% of points on his first serve and 61% of points on his second serve. He hit 29 winners to just 13 unforced errors across three sets. Forward movement not forgotten, the 17-time grand slam champion won 15 of 24 points at net, and converted 6 of 9 break point opportunities – much to the credit of the recently coined “sabr” (sneaky attack by Roger) return.
