Roger Federer continued his quest for an unprecedented seventh title at the Cincinnati Masters, putting on a showtime performance against Feliciano Lopez in Friday night’s quarterfinals. The Swiss maestro has put an ultra aggressive style into play, and that continued against the Spaniard, with 12 winners in the first set alone. Looking light on his feet, moving well, the 34-year-old Swiss may very well have been “flying all over the court,” as Lopez said in a lighthearted moment when shaking hands at net.
With 26 winners to just 12 unforced errors for the match, Federer advanced to the semifinals with a last second lunge for a volley winner. The Swiss needed 1 hour 2 minutes to defeat Lopez, 6-3 6-4. He will face Andy Murray Saturday afternoon.

Afterward, the 6-time Cincinnati Masters champion reflected on the match. “I did feel good, especially in the first set,” said Federer. “In the second set a little less maybe. It was also an important game to hold being down Love-40. That’s exactly the kind of match it can become. As an experienced tennis player, I’m aware that matches can turn around extremely quickly.”
“It’s good I got out of that game and was able to break right away and then bring it home. Things tend to get away from you super fast against big servers, especially on a surface that’s faster like here. I’m very happy with the match.”
Great match point from @rogerfederer and a funny exchange on the handshake with #Lopez. Very impressive. #tennis http://t.co/jqp3dTJGTQ
