Federer will play in Brazil

Roger Federer, in Miami for the Sony Ericsson Open, announced that he will be playing two exhibition matches in Brazil this December. The confirmation came today in a press conference from the Swiss maestro, who is the most bankable of all the tennis elite. An exhibition tour (Gillette Tour), sponsored by Gillette, will take place at the conclusion of the 2012 ATP World Tour Finals. Reports (not confirmed) indicate Federer will play Tsonga in one exhibition, and Del Potro in another.

“We’re hoping to put together an entire tour,…I will be playing two matches in Brazil.”

“We don’t know what cities yet or against whom exactly, but it’s gonna be happening at the beginning of December, the Gillette Tour. I’m happy that one of my long time sponsors, Gillette, are sponsoring the tour.”

“Colombia has announced as well that I will be playing in Colombia, so we are looking for maybe one or two more places to play.”

Federer has never played the handful of clay ATP events in South America, which clash with the February European indoor schedule and the hardcourt event in Dubai.

“I remember playing juniors in Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela back in the day, probably 1996,…that’s as close as I’ve gotten really to South America.”

“But it’s obviously special to go to new places. For a world traveller it’s always exciting. People who know me know how much I love seeing in new people, new countries, and new cultures.”
