Federer Wins Back to Back Three Setters in Shanghai – For the second night in a row, Roger Federer needed three sets to advance to the next round at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. On Thursday night in front of a sold out Qi Zhong stadium, the Swiss maestro got off to a quick start, but would soon strap in for a battle against aggressive baseliner, Roberto Bautista Agut. Federer broke serve in the fourth game of the first set and completed the 30 minute set with a backhand volley winner on his first set point. Immediately breaking serve to open the second set, it appeared the two-time Shanghai Rolex Masters champion was carrying the momentum to the finish line. However, Bautista Agut reeled off four straight games for a 4-1 lead in the second set. The Spaniard engaged the 37-year-old Swiss in several lengthy rallies from then on in the match. Bautista Agut consistently applied pressure on Federer’s serve, breaking to clinch the second set and take the advantage of serving first into the third and final set.
However it was deja vu for the 20-time grand slam champion, as he found a way to break serve late for the second night in a row, this time in the eighth game of the third set, going on to serve out the match soon after. Completing the 6-3 2-6 6-4 victory, Federer advances to Friday’s quarterfinals where he will face Kei Nishikori, who defeated Sam Querrey, 7-6 (4) 6-4.
