The year’s second grand slam is next on schedule, Roland Garros (French Open). Roger Federer will be sporting a complete new Nike kit on the red clay in Paris. Part of the Nike tennis summer 2012 line, the Swiss maestro will be sporting an all black look, with RF smash clay polo, RF anthracite t-shirt, match woven shorts, and RF smash jacket. Along with his apparel is new footwear, the new Nike Vapor 9 Tour SL Anthracite/Cyber shoes.

Top seeded Novak Djokovic put an end to the Swiss maestro’s run Saturday night in Rome. Federer had come back from a six week layoff, winning the Madrid masters title and cruising into the semifinals of the Rome masters. The Serbian read the serve of the Swiss well and broke twice in the opening set alone to jump out to a one set lead. Things were much closer in the second set, with both players holding serve until midway in the set.

Djokovic then decisively broke, making it appear as if the match was surely now his. However, Federer struck back, fending off a match point with a scorching forehand winner and breaking serve to even the match at 5 all in the second set. From there, a love hold reversed the roles, as it was now Djokovic needing to serve to stay in the set. That he did, and ensuing was a tiebreak which began with a 25 shot rally, won by the Serb when Federer netted a forehand.

Mini break in hand, Djokovic hung on and edged out to defeat Federer 6-2 7-6 (4). He will now take on Rafael Nadal in the final of the Rome masters, with the #2 ranking and seeding for Roland Garros at stake. For the part of the Swiss maestro, if Djokovic wins Sunday, Federer keeps his #2 ranking and will be seeded #2 for the year’s second slam. If Nadal wins, he reclaims the #2 ranking and will be seeded as such at Roland Garros.

Back to back late night starts for Roger Federer, little past 10pm on Friday night, as he took on home crowd favorite, Andreas Seppi. The Swiss maestro stormed to taking the first set, losing only a handful of points before serving it out 6-1, in just 19 minutes. The home crowd had little to cheer behind the Italian Seppi, but early in the second set brought closely contested points, and the crowd eagerly anticipated more resistance from their countryman.

The Swiss had other plans, as he continued to accelerate thru the match, breaking Seppi twice more, along with hitting 25 winners. The crowd was left stunned, as Federer swiftly served out the match, 6-1 6-2 in 54 minutes. He will take on top seeded Novak Djokovic in Saturday’s semifinal at the Rome masters.

Beginning past 9:30pm in Rome, a delighted crowd at the Italian Open was treated to a vintage throwback match from a decade ago. Roger Federer took on Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 2003 Roland Garros champion. The match began one sided, with the Swiss maestro brushing aside one difficult service game to cruise toward the first set, 6-2. The second set displayed resistance from the Spaniard, who kept even with Federer and broke in the eleventh game.

Ferrero then served out the second set 7-5, and the match went onward into the night. In the deciding third set, it was the Swiss maestro who picked up from his dominance of the first set. He jumped to an early lead, and never let up, taking the final set in a hurry. After an extended rally, Federer whipped a backhand down the line for a winner, then comfortably served out the match, 6-2 5-7 6-1, in 1 hour 47 minutes. The Swiss fired 11 aces and hit 46 winners. He is now thru to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open, the Rome masters.

Coming off his 20th masters 1000 title in Madrid on Sunday, the Swiss maestro was questionable to play the Italian Open in Rome this week. Confirmed early Tuesday that he would be playing, fans flocked to his practice session to cheer him on.

On Wednesday, he took on Argentine Carlos Berlocq. It was the first meeting between the two, and Federer had no trouble easing into the third round with a 6-3 6-4 victory in just under 70 minutes. The match even saw a few sandstorms because of the wind swirling around the clay. The Swiss broke in the first game, and went onto a 3-0 lead, later serving out the set comfortably. Displaying the fine form which has led to four titles already in 2012, Federer faced resistance from Berlocq in the second set, only to break twice more and close out the match efficiently. The Swiss also continued to show the more than usual net game on clay, winning 18 of 23 points at the net, along with hitting 23 winners.

The Swiss is a two time finalist in Rome (2003, 2006), and will face former #1, Juan Carlos Ferrero (2001 champion) in the third round.

The Swiss maestro, who won a record tying 20th masters 1000 title at the Madrid masters Sunday, told reporters that he is unsure on competing at the Rome masters this week.

UPDATE: confirmed by source in the press, Federer said early Tuesday morning that he will play this week at the Rome masters.

Federer said he took some anti-inflammatory medication in Madrid. “I have to give me a few days to see how I feel and make a decision…Tomorrow I travel to Rome, and play normally. The truth is that my body hurts after this tournament.” Scheduled to play Wednesday, the Swiss will likely make his decision late on Tuesday.

With Sunday’s historic win, Federer has also moved back to #2 in the ATP World Tour rankings, passing Rafael Nadal. He spoke about ambitions to regain #1.

“Back then I was just trying to stay world No. 1 and I never really looked at Pete’s record that much…I guess I could have chased it a few years ago, just really trying to beat that record. It’s no secret for any player out there that you’d rather be No. 1 than No. 2. But I look at the long term, maybe if I wasn’t good enough to break that record then maybe I never will be… I don’t need to beat every record Pete set, he’s my idol after all and I’m just happy I’m that close already. [But it would be] absolutely amazing.”

After defeating Tomas Berdych to win his third title at the Madrid masters (4th title of 2012, 20th masters 1000 title, 74th title of career), Roger Federer attended the premiere of Will Smith’s upcoming movie, Men in Black 3. The premiere was held nearby at La Caja Magica, and both Federer and Smith took part in the event. Actor Will Smith presented the Swiss maestro with a special tuxedo during the trophy ceremony.

Earlier today, Roger Federer won the 2012 Madrid masters, his 4th title of the year and 74th title of his career. In a record tying 20th ATP World Tour masters 1000 title, he also passed Rafael Nadal for #2 in the rankings come Monday.

In the Federer box were two special guests alongside wife Mirka, coaches Paul Annacone and Severin Luthi. They are the adorable Federer twins, Myla Rose and Charlene Riva. Today they were court side for the match and “daddy” came over to embrace them after his win.
